A simple introduction to domains, nameservers, DNS records and safe changes.
A domain name is the readable address people use to reach a website or email service. DNS connects that name to the correct server.
Common records
• A and AAAA records point a name to an IP address.
• CNAME records point one name to another name.
• MX records direct incoming email.
• TXT records are often used for ownership and email-security verification.
Before changing DNS, save a copy of the current records and confirm the exact destination values. DNS updates can take time to appear because resolvers keep cached copies. Avoid deleting mail records when changing only the website. Keep domain contact information current, enable account protection, and renew the domain before its expiry date.
